Product Description

Nespresso C101 Essenza Automatic Espresso Maker

Nespresso has developed a unique extraction system specially adapted to capsules. It controls every vital setting when preparing a perfect espresso. Nespresso machines have been designed with renowned partners and designers, and bring out the taste and aromas of coffee by combining quality of design with ease of use. The Nespresso C101 Essenza Automatic Machine is part of our compact line, which features a modern, compact, and practical design. The machine deploys technology essential for preparing an outstanding espresso, and is exceptionally easy to use. Automatically control the amount of coffee in the cup. The high pressure pump extracts all the aromas and develops a smooth crema. The thermobloc heats water to between 187 degrees and 196 degrees during extraction and empties the remaining water after each use so that the water is fresh for each preparation. It uses a simple system which perforates the capsule and soaks all the ground coffee to optimally filter the coffee. The functional handle system allows for easy coffee preparation. Automatic ejection of used capsule makes cleanup a snap. The water container is removable for easy filling. Includes 16 coffee capsules (1 sample of each Grand Cru offered). All Nespresso machines include this sampling pack.

Features
  • Thermoblock heating element
  • Easy insertion and ejection of capsules
  • Holds 12-14 used capsules
  • Removable water tank: 30 oz. capacity
  • Simple descaling mode
  • Lightweight, 6 pounds

I had the previous version of this Nespresso machine when I lived back in Europe and happily used it for more than 5 years. I also bought another as a gift to my sister, she loved it too. Having just moved to US, I needed a coffee machine as Starbucks is really not for me. I looked up for some alternatives as I found the price for a single Nespresso cup to be about 50% more expensive here than it was back in Europe. With my drinking habits, it is not really an issue but I am somewhat disappointed by Nespresso's attitude and prices, which I find snobbish (no flame wars please, this is my perception).

I came close to buying a real espresso machine like Gaccia Classic with a burr grinder, just to move away from Nespresso than anything else. Total price would be almost 4 times of Essenza C101's. Each cup of coffee would be cheaper but it would take years to break even. I was still OK with it as I wanted to move away from Nespresso but then I read in multiple reviews that using a classic espresso machine at home is a lot messier than using Nespresso and requires a lot of time investment in preparing a coffee. That was the deal-breaker for me.

I have never had a problem with my previous Essenza, it is compact, doesn't occupy much space, and makes very good coffee for my taste without much hassle. You turn it on, let it heat for a minute, pass an empty cup to warm it up even more, have your coffee and turn it off. That's all. I personally do not want to spend a lot of time for preparing a coffee or be a coffee expert. For me coffee is something I drink while focusing on another thing, like working, reading, talking to a friend etc.

So all in all, make sure you know what you are buying and what you will get for what you pay. If you are after a good coffee, prepared without much knowledge, hassle or mess, this is probably one of your safe bets. If you have a much finer palate, would like to go deep in your knowledge about the espresso culture, better look elsewhere before making a decision.

I give this product five stars as it meets my needs in the way I want. It may not need your needs if you have different preferences or tastes (read above). I am not terribly happy with Nespresso's stance as a company but this is not something I will reflect in my scoring for this product.

This machine is a waste of money. I got it as a gift. If the makers weren't ripoff artists they would have made it easy to put your own coffee in...like Keurig did. This product is just a lot of marketing hype. Not even remotely worth the money.

Got this great coffee machine for my birthday. Used it at the office for about 4 months - everyone loved it. Took it with me when I moved to DC. All was good, new friends loved it.

All of a sudden - after making a few coffees this morning - the handle is stuck and the unit will not open or operate. No obvious way to open it up to repair - all I can do is hope for warranty coverage? Will see...

I ordered this for my work mates so we could enjoy espresso without paying an arm and a leg. For the price of the unit and the capsules, it is a great deal. However, the "user interface" could be improved. The buttons are used for multiple purposes, and the meaning of the backlit buttons (flashing, solid, or off) is not immediately clear without having read the manual, and then having to re-read it when you forget. It could be as simple as having a single button to start flow, and a dial to set the flow time. That way you would know for sure what the next flow time is going to be. In a shared situation work mates would reset the flow time by holding down a button and often inadvertently set it to the minimum (and useless) 3 seconds.

A few years back I took up coffee as a modestly expensive hobby. I have explored varietals and blends of beans from Peets, Starbucks and others and upgraded to a low speed Capresso burr grinder,  Jura-Capresso 560 Infinity Conical Burr Grinder, Brushed Silver, 8.5-Ounce

However it has all been drip brew which is not to complain when using a 4cup Cuisinart maker which is one of the few getting the water hot enough but not too hot,
Cuisinart DCC-450BK 4-Cup Coffeemaker with Stainless-Steel Carafe, Black

Yes, I have wanted to explore espresso for years. No, not for $400 up to thousands just to buy into infinite fussiness and the promise of quality only after getting the fuss just right. The Nespresso promises were a match to my requirements. Promises are easy to make. This makes good espresso.

I reviewed the specs for all models. Other than the one manual model and the (lower) 14bar pump for one line all the price differences appear to be styling. Even this model has an unadvertised energy saving auto off for the heater. So the lowest price is as good as the highest if styling doesn't matter.

The other consideration was buying into a single source for the capsules. I would never consider that for regular coffee such as the Kuerig system as prep time is less than a minute including grinding doing it the old fashioned way. On top of that essentially any coffee works with the drip method so there are no limitations on the kinds of coffees to use.

I went to the website and found the descriptions of their coffees. You never can know but they said the right words about beans, locations, roasting and blending. The price is in the ballpark of specialty beans and blends that I buy for drip so it is not a cheap machine to sell over-priced coffee. Buy only from Nepresso. The resellers double the price.

It is good that the machine comes with one each of their standard coffees as the first one I did not like and the second not much better. That turned out to be luck of the draw as a matter of my taste not the fault of the machine. The rest turned out to be much more to my taste.

And this leads to the reason I would not use a capsule system for regular coffee, personal taste. I have found that coffee to my taste depends upon the ratio of water to coffee affects how I perceive its quality. So this simple system depends upon finding a coffee that meets your taste without adjusting the water amount or making it not so simple by adjusting the water for each kind of coffee. Adjusting the water is simple but the system is no longer as simple.

I will have to update this later on if it works. I am going to pursue the strategy of selecting by aromatic notes and then optimizing the water. It works for drip coffee.*

Speaking of aroma and being prepared to be damned by purists, much of the point of espresso is the aroma. And a concern is preheating the small cup. A regular size styrofoam cup needs no preheating and holds a lot of aroma in the volume of air above the coffee.

---

* If bitter dominates taste use more water. If it tastes weak use less water. If neither works for your taste move on to a different blend of beans. It is always a matter of your taste and nothing but your taste no matter what anyone says is best. On top of that your stomach like mine may not like beans that are too acid.
