This lightweight cutter divides a potato into its french-fry essence in a jiffy. One blade creates up to 49 3/8-inch fries with a single lever-push. The other creates up to 25 half-inch fries. You'll get those numbers, however, only if you precisely shape a large potato to fit the bed. The bed's size is the cutter's only drawback. Even if you cut a large potato to fit the head, the fry length is at most 3-1/2 inches. That length, however, is ideal for carrot, cucumber, and zucchini batons to assemble a vegetable tray around a bagna cauda, an Italian dipping sauce of olive oil, butter, garlic, and anchovies. I recently bought an air fryer, and needed a way to make consistently sized fries quickly, otherwise some would cook too quickly while others were still soft and starchy. For this price I was not anticipating a restaurant quality machine, but I was quite happy with how well it works. It does feel a little bit weak, and the blades could certainly be sharper, but it does produce excellent fries and makes a long tedious job super quick. With daily use in a restaurant setting I would not expect a long life out of this as it feels a bit weak, but for how often I will be using it, it seems perfect. I do have to section larger potatoes to make them fit, but that's not a big concern.

Since I have manually been cutting my own French fries for sides, I figured I would try it for the price and found that it worked much better than expected and saved tons of time/labor. A large Potato may need to be trimmed or squared off slightly to fit easily, but the slicer works great and cleans easily.

Unlike other reviews that nearly scared me off, the lever felt solid and easily cut through the largest potato with no problems as long as you have a little hand strength to get it started. The slicer is equipped with a long hand lever (moment arm) for increased inertia which results in reduced cutting effort.

Just a great product for the price for anyone who is manually hand cutting their french fries. There are 2 different blade options for thicker or thinner fries depending on how you like them. I have just used the thicker blade and only use it for French fries but would imagine the smaller blade would cut even easier.

I got this to cut up potatoes (russet) to make french fries (I like to just cut them long, skin and all, and just bake them until they are brown and have fat free french fries! This makes cutting them so much easier. It holds a small-medium size russet (sometimes I have to cut the tip off to get it to fit) and with a little pressure I can push down on the lever and dice them into perfect french fries (can even use the smaller cutter that was included for smaller crispier fries; I see it as eitehr Burger King (fatter) or McDonalds (thinner) fries).

This is easy to use (it does require some force) and the grate and pusher pop out for easy cleaning. The device is well made and feels really sturdy! Highly recommend! I plan on getting some other veges to try this on and see if I can make some vegetable fries!

Considering the price (I paid less than $8), I think this is a good cutter for small & infrequent jobs, plus it comes with 2 sizes of blade grates.

I made a batch of fries today, using a small bag of small potatoes, and it worked well. However, when cleaning, I did have to pick out some potato guts from the main unit that got stuck in a crevice.

If you are going to use potatoes that are significantly larger than small ones (medium sized might be "iffy" or you'll have to cut the potato up so it fits and can be cut without excessive effort), or if you need to use this device frequently, then I'd recommend paying more money and getting something better (bigger and more durable).... but for the price I think it is a good unit if you understand its capacity limitations and don't need to use it frequently.

Overall 4 stars for the price.

Should anything change then I'll update this review.

UPDATE 2014-04-21: I've used this several times to make fries and it has performed well. It really does work well as an inexpensive fry cutter as long as you don't try to slice too many fries at one time. Small or medium sized potatoes, or big potatoes pre-cut in chucks will slice relatively easily, just don't try to slice too much at a time. If you make fries all the time then I would recommend something more expensive and heavier duty, but for my needs and for the price I would definitely recommend this.

It works fine. Pretty hard to push down the lever. Kept thinking it was going to break. The huge downside is that it only cuts very small potatoes. I tried to put a medium on in and had to cut the tips off a good inch each and shave off some of the side. Granted, these potatoes are regular old potatoes you buy in a bag. They aren't large so I'm disappointed that I have to cut the potatoes to fit. I was under the impression that this could at least hold a medum sized potato

For $12, I'm stunned by what I got. Sometimes you get more than you pay for. Really, this is a very tough little tool that should cost more. I like the fact that it has 2 sizes but I only use the smaller one. Just more value for those of you that like thick fries as well.

A couple of points to make for those who are under the illusion that cutting fries should be as easy as 1-2-3 just because you dropped $12 on a cutter: First, if you just take a potato, shove it in this thing and press, it's not going to be pleasant. It helps if you do something to soften your potatoes up first. This is a manual machine, not an automatic one, so it's not the machine's fault that you might have to exert a lot of energy to cut a hard potato! You can--and you should--microwave or simmer the potatoes first (I wouldn't boil, so as to avoid over-softening) before cutting. Just enough to soften them up a bit. Secondly, you probably still will need to use the force and balance of 2 hands to push the lever down and cut the potato into perfectly formed fries, but again, this is a manual cutter, so that's fine with me. Once you prepare the potato it will be easier to cut.

So to repeat, sure, you shouldn't have to do this for an automated potato cutter, but this isn't it. I would urge people to keep that in mind before they expect the sun, the moon and the stars for $12.

In a perfect world, I would like the potato bay to be a bit bigger so I can put bigger ones in there, but really, it's not going to kill me to cut the potato in half first. I'm more than willing to do that.

But the bottom line is, once you get these things cut, the fact that they are uniformly cut into the same size gives you the ability to cook all your fries evenly in a pot of oil or a deep fryer. And that's what is needed to make french fries so pleasant and fun to eat. This cutter allows you to avoid the annoyance of a plate full of fries where some are a 1/2 inch thick and others are barely 1/10th.

Although I used to hand cut, the convenience this tool offers means that I use this every time I do bistro style steak-frites at home. And I enjoy every minute of it.

Have been using this cutter for quite some time now. It performs brilliantly, is easy to clean, and has been going just fine under our workload. The only issue, and hence the four star rating, is that it's a bit short and narrow. You can't put larger potatoes in this cutter without first chopping them into smaller pieces, which is more work and can't have long fries!
