This book is very helpful in giving ideas on how to build your own chicken coop. Read it thoroughly to get everything it offers to design your own.

I'm not interested in gimmicks, fads or detailed how tos as much as why, best practices, and generally useful information, which this book provides. If you want a "don't make me think" approach, where you don't get in depth knowledge, go find a "how to" book with detailed saw measurements and instructions. Or stick with the farmer's wisdom in this book. It made me confident I knew what I was doing and why, and my hens are happy campers.

very informative and loaded with information /facts that I will keep in the back of my mind once I get around to having the confidence to build my own coop. I was not expecting the book to provide me with detailed plans, so I had no expectations around that.
I have found, in all the books on coops, that each author has their own experience and is sharing what they have learned with us. to expect it all to be found in one book is expecting a lot and not realistic - my opinion only. I pick and choose what I want to retain in each writing and form my own direction at some point. that is how I go about it!

First I would like to say that the information in this pamphlet is useful, and in and of it self is worth the price if you know WHAT YOUR GETTING... This is a word for word copy (and I do mean word for word) of the "Housing" section in "Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens" By Gail Damerow. The book is well worth the money for all the information (outside of this chicken coop section) in it. You can pick up the book between 10 and 15 dollars (and it's worth every penny). Most people I have talked with (and some of the reviews below) stated they just ended up buying the book.

Next thing to consider is that this is not a chicken coop construction manual. There are really no plans in it (just ideas). If your looking for chicken coop designs with plans I would suggest "Poultry House Construction" By Michael Roberts. It has 8 or 9 coop PLANS with black and white photos to show you what it will look like. Mr. Roberts book also gives you nesting box plans, broody coops, and much more in under a hundred pages. I think the book was only $11.00 american dollars.

In closing do buy "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" By Gail Damerow, and do buy "Poultry House Construction" By Micheal Roberts. I just can't in good faith tell you to buy this pamphlet given you will probably end up buying another book because the pamphlet really needs the rest of the book to be useful.

I have a couple of other books by Gail Damerow and this is basically excerpts from them but the info is useful and it is like a quick reference guide when constructing a basic structure for your chickens. I used this info when I was designing the coop that we are building this weekend.

Good info.

This book will give folks a great basic knowledge on how to build a chicken enclosure. I had already built one when I bought this book. I wish I had waited to read it, because I built mine too big, too expensive, and without some nice options. If you are thinking about raising a few chickens, this book is a cheap investment.
