I was looking at the Xerox color laser and Xerox ColorQube wax cube printers - and just couldn't justify the consumables expense. Maybe if I was printing newsletters and print jobs as a professional printer taking money, I could justify it, but we are a small computer shop and I needed something to do mailings and ads that looked a little better than inkjet.

This one fix the bill! The starter set went from showing %100 remaining to zero remaining, all at once. I was hoping to get some kind of sliding scale that let me order new toner. Thankfully I picked up the non-oem Hi-Vision set at the same time. I will review that separately (great toners).

I estimate that I got 700 pages of double sided, full color prints. I guess you could say 1400 to 1500 prints. We went through 1 ream of nice color laser paper plus a few hundred extra sheets I had lying around.

Not one single jam or error. The setup was super easy. The printer is pretty light, I guess. Setup was fully automated. The device cleans and calibrates itself. I should have done one these a long time ago. The toner tray slides out and each toner is showing. No drum rotation or mechanical shenanigans. Pull out the toner cartridge. Stick in the new one. Slide tray closed. Done.

The manual flip-down tray for envelopes and manual feed, is pretty weak. Holds maybe 15 pieces of paper, or 8 envelopes.
I wouldn't want to rely on it for manual feeds. The normal Tray 1 holds maybe 200 to 250. It's not a full ream of 500. But it works great, and the paper output can only hold so many, so it works out.

I would recommend this printer for nice color use. The prints look great.

***I am editing my original review. I regret purchasing this printer. It makes printing a pain in the rear. In printing on black & white setting, it quit printing right in the middle of the job and showed "C toner cartridge nearing end of cartridge life" . Ummm, that's Cyan-for color printing so why did it halt my b&w print job. Not to mention that every single time it stops printing due to needing to replace the cartridge, that you CANNOT override it. Your just done until you replace the cartridge. I found a way around it by purchasing a ton of replacement toner chips on Amazon. I simply replace the chip that keeps track of paper count and it allows me to get at least 500 more clear pages. So that is annoying and a needless waste of the $130 cartridges. I emailed Cannon tech support as to how to override the "replace cartridge" message so that I can finish a printing job and they told me how but it did not work even when I followed the directions to a tee-multiple times. I am going to have to find a different printer since my typical documents run 400 pages and I have to replace the toner cartridges after about every three print runs. So I end up having to "babysit" the thing because every time I walk away and come back expecting it to be finished, I find it isn't and it's sitting idle with some "replace cartridge" message. That is just ridiculous, time consuming and I could print cheaper on an ink jet which is crazy. Worst purchase I have ever made.

Original Review: It prints fast and delivers beautiful quality. However, after purchasing the $130 black toner cartridges, that specify "yields up to 3400 pages" I quickly realized that this was a huge problem since I only got about 1500 pages from the new cartridge. That puts my cost per page at almost .09 per page. I could go to my local copy shop and pay .05-.06 cents per page. After researching further, I realized that that "3400 pages" is based on printing on 5% of the page. This seems plausible if you were only printing out letters, or other text only documents. However, my needs were for printing out b&w images that covered a large portion of each page therefore taking my yield way down. The other issue that I ran into was that the chip on the cartridge told the printer that the toner was empty after about 700 pages, however when I took it out and shook the toner, I was able to get another 800 pages out of it! The only way that I was able to still print was by replacing the chip on the cartridge with a new chip that I had purchased from a toner refill company. Without that, the printer would not allow me to continue printing until I had replaced the cartridge. So, taking all of this into consideration, I feel that the only way that this printer would be affordable to use is to purchase toner refill kits and continue to refill the toner cartridges until they no longer produce a clear copy. Without that option, this printer would cost about .09 cents per b&w copy and an exorbitant amount for the color copies.

Prints beautiful colors! This printer is defiantly worth the money for the print and it prints a good amount before you need to replace the "ink". My rating is not about the print job but how it works. I have had this printer for over a year and the control panel will not turn on! Sometimes it can take a whole day for the panel to turn on and I can finally print something. In calling Canon it seems we will have to get it fixed....of course after the warranty is up. When it was working it would take forever to start up too. Very annoying.

I agree with most of what others have said - the manual is next to useless and the printer is a bit noisy, especially when starting up. The print quality is good - the colors seem true and with photos there is no visible banding as often is the case with the less expensive color lasers. However, the photo quality is not as sharp as it was with the Samsung CLP-415, which is about the same price. But, the Samsung is a piece of junk (see my review - I had to return 2 of them as defective), this Canon appears to be a very well built machine. I can't yet speak about the cost of toner etc - we'll have to see how long the starter cartridges last. There are a number of sources, both on Amazon and elsewhere, for 3rd party toner cartridges at about half the Canon price - I'll most likely give one of them a try when the time comes. Meanwhile, I'm satisfied with this Canon, though not ecstatically happy. But is there a better choice in this price range???? I don't think so.

Just a follow-up - Jan 3 2014. Still using the starter cartridges - indicators show still have plenty of toner in them, so I'm impressed with that. Printer holding up well so far.
