With her usual warmth, perceptiveness, and humor, Newbery Medal winner Beverly Cleary creates the joys and worries of a young girl's first crush.

It seems too good to be true. The most popular boy in school has asked Jane out—and she's never even dated before. Stan is tall and good-looking, friendly and hard-working—everything Jane ever dreamed of. But is she ready for this?

Suppose her parents won't let her go? What if she's nervous and makes a fool of herself? Maybe he'll think she's too young. If only she knew all the clever things to say. If only she were prettier. If only she were ready for this...

About the Author

Beverly Cleary is one of America's most beloved authors. As a child, she struggled with reading and writing. But by third grade, after spending much time in her public library in Portland, Oregon, she found her skills had greatly improved. Before long, her school librarian was saying that she should write children's books when she grew up.

Instead she became a librarian. When a young boy asked her, "Where are the books about kids like us?" she remembered her teacher's encouragement and was inspired to write the books she'd longed to read but couldn't find when she was younger. She based her funny stories on her own neighborhood experiences and the sort of children she knew. And so, the Klickitat Street gang was born!

Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the American Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented to her in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature. Dear Mr. Henshaw won the Newbery Medal, and Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Ramona and Her Father have been named Newbery Honor Books. Her characters, including Beezus and Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ralph, the motorcycle-riding mouse, have delighted children for generations.

I read this when I was 12 and now I'm 72. I remembered everything including my feelings reading it as a young girl who wanted to be fifteen, dating, and sure of herself. What a relief to discover that fifteen year old girls did not have all the answers either. Reading it now was like opening a time capsule. Thank you! I enjoyed it even more this time.

"Fifteen" takes us back to 1959 - back when milk was delivered to your door and dogs ate horse meat and girls didn't call boys on the phone. Babysitter Jane Purdy resolves that "Today, I will meet a boy."

And, by golly, she DOES! Stan Crandall, doggie meat delivery boy, strolls into her life as she's having a nightmarish time babysitting an eight-year-old monster (actually, I know kids like that one -- not much has changed since the fifties).

How many 16-year-old boys today can date a girl for months without even asking for a kiss? How many 16-year-old boys today (or 30-year-old men, for that matter) are gentlemen enough to wait for the young lady to be seated before sitting down himself? Stan is perfect. And after some miscommunication and misunderstandings, they finally connect. And it's absolutely beautiful. A "must read" for all romantics, ESPECIALLY the hopeless ones.

There are some things you cannot grow too old for... like this teenage part-coming-of-age-part-love story. Some of the lessons in the book are still applicable to my 29-year-old self. Great book. I will recommend to my future daughters, my niece when she gets old enough to read, and everyone who is looking for a quick read!

This book made me feel all sorts of happy. It is a lighthearted read that touches all the right places. I feel like it started contemporary YA romances. It's all the same premise but set in 1950s. Girl is looking for love. Boy popped out of nowhere. Boy liked Girl. Girl has insecurity issues and thinks Boy doesn't really like her. A pretty girl comes in. Confusions happen. Girl finds herself. Boy gets the confidence. And it is all happily ever after. It is a really nice read. I realized that love really conquers time. Regardless of the year when it is happening, romance still plays out the same and it's fun to read it from a 1950s perpective. I had to look it up how teens dress during those years. What is an ID bracelet. Why can they go out and date during their teen years. I thought parents should be more strict during those years but turns out it is because the civil war just ended, parents encourage their children to date and get married earlier. The only part that made me cringe is when Stan finally gave his ID bracelet to Jane and he said "You're my girl". OMG, too cheesy!!! But I guess that's how it really is during those years. This much loved book is a walk down Memory Lane. It was already old fashioned when I read it as a young teen, but I loved it anyway. Times may change, but the feelings of a youth on the cusp of their first romance doesn't. Beverly Cleary writes about feeling socially awkward, waiting in anticipation for a phone call, and just wanting to feel that you belong to something. It's also fun to notice life before Facebook, a home with just one phone line, and walking to babysitting jobs.

I remember reading this book as a child but couldn't remember the title. A friend helped me figure it out and I loved reading it again as an adult. It is a cute story of coming of age in the 50's and 60's.

Even though it is from a long time ago the experience of being a teenage girl does not change. I would recommend it to other 15 year old girls who aren’t very sure whether they’re doing things the right way.

Bella storia del primo amore adolescenziale, non particolarmente profonda, ma verosimile. Facile rispecchiarvisi. Beverly Clearly riesce sempre a cogliere le sfumature dell'animo dei suoi personaggi.

5.0 out of 5 stars I often remembered reading my favourite book as a young teenager

A few days ago, an old school friend posted pics of the inside of my old high school. I hadn't seen inside my school since 1982!! The picture taken inside the library, showed the seating arrangements had not changed, neither had the book shelves. I often remembered reading my favourite book as a young teenager. The picture brought it all back vividly!

I knew the book was called "Fifteen", but didn't remember the author's name. I had tried to find this book several years ago, but without knowing the author, it was impossible. Thank you Google that I was able to google "book set in 1950's romance fifteen" and a link to Amazon UK came up and there was my old favourite book! I'm waiting for it to arrive here in Australia from the UK.

I'm not sure yet whether or not I'll let my daughter read this though. I remember the book was good, clean fun, but that the main character was in desperate need of a boyfriend. I don't want my daughter to be like that. I'm pretty sure this book did influence me when I was in high school! ;)

Even after 50 years I can't look at a cashmere jumper without thinking of this book.
I read this in school when I was 15 and have never forgotten it. I'm not sure why because it is a very innocent tale and probably too tame for today's readers. I read it again tonight and it still felt the same.

I first read this book many years ago when I was about twelve years old, it was given to me by my cousin who was a bit older than me and since then I have reread it many times and now some forty years later I have really enjoyed reading it again! I would recommend this book to anyone.
