With the numerous capabilities of a standard chef's knife, the Grand Prix II 7 Inch Hollow Ground Santoku Knife could very well take over in any kitchen. Wusthof takes traditional Asian styling another step up in contemporary looks with the molded and bonded black synthetic handle that features pebbled no-slip texturing along with precision balancing. Full tang construction is a German hallmark of quality with the blade coming from a single block of steel alloy incorporating high carbon content and other premium components that lend strength and stain resistance. Final tempering, giving it a Rockwell 58 hardness, contributes to its stability. A recessed bolster keeps fingers safely out of the way while allowing for full sharpening from tip to heel. Edging with its distinct indentations is another component that aids in the release of sticky or starchy foods while reducing drag. For chopping, dicing, cutting, slicing and more, the Wusthof Grand Prix II Santoku Knife's hollow ground edge guarantees superior performance even in the hands of beginning chefs. The bonus bamboo cutting board is not only a beautiful addition to countertops, it provides a durable work surface that is exceptionally easy on blades.

Oh my word, i love this knife. After much research on different brands, i went with Wusthof b/c of so many people raved about this brand AND they sell it at high end respected kitchen stores. But i got such a good price here on Amazon, and it came with this great board. This knife is my go-to knife. The handle is comfortable, the blade is sharper than any knife i have EVER owned. I want to chop and dice everything now....my zyliss chopper is missing me.
I have the original Grand Prix set I got 35 yrs ago, which has a little beefier hilt (easier on the index finger). The Grand Prix II was their replacement, so if I a knife broke Wusthof replaced it with the Grand Prix II (lifetime warranty). Still quality German steel forged blades and at $100, with a custom cutting board, it was a steal.
My own Wusthof "Grand Prix II" has been my go-to knife for several years, the one I use for almost everything. It's the perfect size, and its comfortable non-slip handle is a real safety feature. I got this set as a Christmas gift for my son; the great price plus the cutting board made it irresistable!
The knife and cutting board had a nice appearance to them. The knife was a bit lighter than I imagined it would be, but that does not affect my opinion of it one way or the other. The blade was very sharp. I will update this review as time goes to see how the blade holds up.
I bought one for my kitchen. It became a source of friction between my husband and me. I bought another one. Then I bought one for my nephew's birthday gift. Then I bought one for my sister-in-law...are you sensing a pattern? It is the best knife I've ever used. Buy one!
The knife I received is a top notch knock-off! looks VERY similar to the real deal. This is not a case of the product "not matching" the rest of the set. In fact, if I weren't familiar with the Wusthof line, and didn't have a set of genuine knives to compare it to, I may not have been certain that this knife is not genuine.
I am not accusing the vendor of intentionally misleading consumers (perhaps someone up the supply chan is taking advantage), however consumers should know what they are REALLY buying. Here are the reasons I know this product is a fake:
*Wusthof Grand Prix II knives are NOT NSF certified, yet this knife is stamped with NSF logo
*Etched product labels are formatted in a universal way across all product lines. This knife is inconsistent with this standard and lists the product line on the left, logo centered, and "Wusthof" on the right.
*The Grand Prix II line is made with Wusthof's legendary metal alloy and is has the formula etched on the blade. This knife is missing the "X 50 Cr Mo V 15" etching.
I will be requesting a full refund if a genuine replacement cannot be guaranteed. I will also forward this info on to Wusthof, as I'm sure they will be interested on knowing who sells counterfeit versions of their knives.
Always a bit unsure about Santuko knives as compared with standard cook's knife, but the wider, thinner and scalloped blade does offer advantages for slicing meat, fish, fruit and veggies. Seems useless for chopping, but maybe there's a different technique. I bought it while in temporary accommodation with my normal kitchen knives in storage - it took only a day trying to use the knives provided in the furnished apartment to realize I had to have at least one decent knife! So I don't regret buying it, and now I have it I'll keep it, but with hindsight should have kept at least a basic knife set with me rather than adding something I don't really need. Of course, great Wusthof quality, and an extra knife always good to have.
